Newcastle midfielder Jack Colback believes the lenient refereeing in the Championship will help him to get away with a lot more in a Newcastle shirt this season.

The 26 year old has picked up 11 and 12 yellow cards respectively in his last two Premier League seasons but he told the Evening Chronicle that he doesn’t expect to be picking up as many cards in England’s second tier this campaign:

“I think the refereeing is different compared to the Premier League. I think you do get away with a little bit more, which helps those of us who pick up yellows too often!”

Colback has been in and out of the team under Rafa Benitez so far this season with the Magpies’ purchase of Isaac Hayden from Arsenal in the summer making it more difficult for the former Sunderland player to get game time in his favoured central midfield role.

He has however started the last two league games and has managed to only pick up one yellow card in nine appearances in all competitions. Whether he can keep that discipline up, we will need to wait and see.
