Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez says the club are planning for the long term despite the immediate concerns of getting results in the Championship.

The Magpies boss has said his primary focus is on the Brentford match on Saturday afternoon but he also revealed that the club are already making plans for the January transfer window, as well as beyond that. He told the Evening Chronicle:

“The present is the next game, Brentford, and we are already looking at their team and their squad and trying to analyse what we think they will do. The fans have to be confident that we are doing our jobs.”

“But at the same time, we are also thinking about January, and even the season after that. But at the same time, we cannot lose our focus and our focus has to be the next game.”

The club made an astonishing twelve signings in the summer with Matt Ritchie, Dwight Gayle, Mohamed Diame, Grant Hanley, Ciaran Clark, Achraf Lazaar, Jesus Gamez, Isaac Hayden, Daryl Murphy, Christian Atsu, Matz Sels and DeAndre Yedlin, making up the list costing a total of £55million. That still was much less the £85million they brought in with Moussa Sissoko, Georginio Wijnaldum and Andros Townsend all being sold. Whether Benitez sees the need to improve in any specific position, we will need to wait until January to find out.
