Newcastle scout Graham Carr and Arsenal’s Bobby Bennett were at the European Under 21 qualifier between Sweden and Spain on Tuesday night, according to Swedish newspaper Expressen, and they were particularly impressed by Sunderland forward Joel Asoro.

The 17 year old made his U21 debut in the 1-1 draw against Spain and it comes off the back of making his debut for the Black Cats in the Premier League against Middlesbrough back in August. He came on as a 81st minute substitute for Duncan Watmore during the match and followed that up by starting his first game three days later as David Moyes’ side won 1-0 against Shrewsbury Town in the second round of the EFL Cup.

Asoro was picked up by Sunderland as a 15 year old from Swedish side IF Brommapojkarna and his rise to first team action in the last month both at club and international level has led to a significant number of clubs taking an interest in the player.
