Newcastle winger Yoan Gouffran says he is now back enjoying his football after enduring a frustrating year last season under both Steve McClaren and Rafa Benitez.

The Frenchman was a regular first team player in his first two and a half years at St James’ Park under previous boss Alan Pardew but made just nine appearances last campaign as the Magpies were relegated to the Championship.

With just one year remaining on his contract, he was on the verge of leaving Tyneside this summer but has impressed boss Benitez at the start of the season when called upon for first team duties.

Gouffran capped off an excellent start to the campaign with a goal against Derby County on Saturday and the Frenchman told the Evening Chronicle he was happy to score his first league goal since January 2015 when he came off the bench to score against Hull City in a 3-0 victory:

“It was a long wait but I didn’t play a lot. So now I am enjoying playing again and to score a goal is good for me. It is a good feeling.I am really happy because I was out and I didn’t play a lot last year. Every game I play now I enjoy it.”

Gouffran will be hoping to continue his good form when the Magpies face QPR at Loftus Road tomorrow night.
