Newcastle utility player Vurnon Anita has pledged his full commitment to the promotion cause this season as he seeks a return to the Premier League with the Magpies.

Whilst other players including fellow countryman Georginio Wijnaldum left the club to play once again in the Premier League after Newcastle’s relegation to the Championship, Anita has decided to stay at St James’ Park.

He told the Shields Gazette that although he has a desire, like every player, to play in the highest division possible, he feels a sense of responsibility to get Newcastle back to the top division after playing in the side that was relegated last season:

“As a player, you always want to play in the highest league. That wasn’t the case this time, but I’ve still got a contract here at Newcastle. I’m here and I’m giving my all… I’m here and I’m doing more than my best. Hopefully, we can be champions this season and come up with Newcastle.”

The 27 year old has played in a number of positions under Rafa Benitez, in both full back positions and in central midfielder, leading to the Magpies boss to claim the Dutchman could play in any position on the pitch. Anita will no doubt play a crucial role in Newcastle’s attempt to return to the top flight at the first attempt this season.
