Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey feels that he and his Newcastle players let the club down by being relegated from the Premier League last season and he is determined to address it by putting in top performances for the Magpies this campaign.

The 24 year old was bought from Swansea City for £12million in the January transfer window, but after being made captain by previous manager Steve McClaren, he was used mostly from the bench by his replacement Rafa Benitez in the final months of the season. Shelvey explains to the Shields Gazette that he felt depressed about letting the fans down but wants to make amends this season:

“I don’t think there’s self-sulking. Personally I went away feeling very down and depressed because you’ve let the club down. You’ve let people down. The club have brought you in and expect you to perform to a certain level and the team didn’t do that. Now it’s down to us to put that right.”

Shelvey’s determination was evident during Newcastle’s 6-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers with two goals to his name on Tuesday. He seems to have turned a corner after not being picked to start in Rafa Benitez’s side for the first match of the season against Fulham in the 1-0 defeat at Craven Cottage.
