Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has said that the Magpies have sent out a message to the rest of the division with the performance against Queens Park Rangers.

The former Liverpool and Swansea player told the Northern Echo that a marker has been put down after the club made it six consecutive wins on Tuesday night:

“Yes, this performance sends out a message to the league to be honest. We needed to go and put down a marker. We’ve won six on the bounce now and it’s a real eye-opener for the other teams in the league.”

Shelvey scored two goals in the match against QPR, the first a deflected effort and the other an absolute screamer, giving him three goals in seven league appearances already this season.

Magpies boss Rafa Benitez has not always been convinced by the 24 year old, and since the Spaniard’s arrival on Tyneside, the £12m signing has been in and out of the side, but something seems to have clicked for the England international in the last few weeks playing under Rafa. He scored a crucial free kick against Brighton & Hove Albion a couple of weeks ago and now seems to have the trust of the manager to become a regular starter in midfield.
