Ciaran Clark has claimed Rafa Benitez was one of the major reasons why he decided to sign for the club this summer.

The 26 year old could see the ambition the Magpies had with the signings that were being brought in but Clark was also keen to work with Benitez, who is renowned as a highly tactical coach with an extensive knowledge of defensive organisation.

Clark told the Times (paywall) that he is already learning from the Spaniard in every training session:

“He [Benitez] was a massive reason why I joined. That and the other players who have signed. I feel like I’m learning already. Every time you step on to the training pitch, he tries to improve you as a team and an individual. That’s something I haven’t had much of over the last few years. He picks up on everything, every little detail.”

Clark had struggled for form at Villa as the club went into freefall under previous owner Randy Lerner. His criticism of a lack of personal development looks to be a thinly veiled dig at previous Villa managers Paul Lambert, Tim Sherwood and Remi Garde who he played under at Villa Park.
