Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill has backed Newcastle United striker Daryl Murphy to get a huge boost from scoring his first international goal.

The 33 year old scored the equaliser in the second half against Serbia in Ireland’s first World Cup qualifier as they salvaged a 2-2 draw. Despite making his debut all the way back in 2007, Murphy had never scored for his country, and former Sunderland boss O’Neill is backing the Irishman to make an impact when he returns to club duty with Newcastle. He is quoted by the Evening Chronicle as saying:

“That goal was very important for him. He will take great confidence with him back to his new club. I’m delighted for him.”

The match was described as a contrast between two Newcastle strikers. Aleksandar Mitrovic started for Serbia but struggled to make an impact with his fitness still in question after missing the first four matches of the league season through suspension.

He was substituted before the hour mark leading to some to question whether Murphy maybe given the nod ahead of Mitrovic as the main target man against Derby County on Saturday evening when the Championship resumes after the international break.
