Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles believes that the Magpies cannot afford to be complacent if they want to get promoted back to the Premier League this season.

Matches come thick and fast in the Championship, and despite winning three matches in a row, the centre half doesn’t want any thoughts entering  the player’s minds that they can simply walk all over teams.

Speaking to the Shields Gazette the Magpies skipper stated: “Players can’t get complacent. We can’t think we’re going to walk all over teams. We’ve got to go there and prepare for every game like it’s a cup final like we did in the last games of last season. We’ve got great players, and with the attitude we’ve been showing recently, we can beat anyone on our day. We’ve got a strong team, and inside our changing room now it’s really strong.”

Newcastle will travel to Derby County this weekend which will no doubt be another challenging match for Rafa Benitez’s side. The fact that there is huge competition for places in the Newcastle squad will almost certainly prevent such complacency creeping in. Club captain Lascelles knows from his own experience that Rafa Benitez is not afraid of dropping players after he himself was left out of the starting lineup for the match against Reading back in August, with Ciaran Clark taking his place in the side.
