Gent manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck believes that goalkeeper Matz Sels has made the right decision in moving to Newcastle United in the summer.

The 24 year old made the £6.5million move to Tyneside in June with the Belgian international also having many other suitors but Vanhaezebrouck thinks the move suited all parties with the keeper joining an “ambitious” club in Newcastle. He told Belgian publication Nieuwsblad:

“As a club we allow players who have made a step forward to move abroad, especially if the club receive an appropriate transfer fee in return Due to his good performances in recent years, that was the last but certainly not the main reason [we let him go]. Matz made a nice transfer to an ambitious and traditional club in England.”

Sels had a shaky start on Tyneside with the keeper seemingly lacking confidence in the first two league matches when they lost to Fulham and Huddersfield Town. He seems to be warming to his task however, and has kept 2 clean sheets in his last three matches, against Bristol City and Brighton.

He will be kept on his toes with Karl Darlow, Freddie Woodman and Rob Elliot (nearing full fitness after missing over 5 months with a knee injury) all vying for a place in the starting eleven under Rafa Benitez.
