Hat trick hero Dwight Gayle says he believes the 4-3 victory over Norwich City was a result of a strong team spirit that has developed in the squad.

The Magpies came from 3-1 down to win 4-3 in stoppage time with two last minute goals from Yoan Gouffran and Gayle sending St James’ Park into raptures. The Newcastle striker’s three goals were vital and he told the Evening Chronicle:

“You want to score last minute winners like that. To do it in front of our own fans at St James’ Park was just unreal. You can tell from our celebrations at the end and the way we were together how close we are. At 3-1 down to win 4-3 shows great team spirit. The pass for the 3-2 goal was crucial and to get that after they scored their third was the perfect time to get it back.”

The 25 year old said the faith of the Newcastle fans helped the players to turn the scoreline around.

“When they were winning our fans got right behind us. And from there we just believed we could do it.”

The last minute goals could prove to be a huge moment in Newcastle’s season. If they had lost the match they would have been seven points behind Norwich, who would have gone top of the league. As it is they are now just one point behind the Canaries in third place. A six point swing that occurred within the dying moments of the game.
