Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez believes his rotation policy will allow the Magpies to field fresh players in every round of the EFL Cup.

Speaking after the 2-0 victory over Wolves in the third round tie last night, the Magpies boss said the eight changes he made to the starting line-up meant his side could compete.

He told the Shields Gazette: “what I would say is that we want to be ambitious, and we want to go for every game and try to win.

”If we cannot, we cannot, but we will try. We have the right players. We changed eight players, but we could still compete.

”That is my idea – to make sure we can play a strong team that can compete against anyone.”

The Spaniard’s penchant for changing winning starting lineups was one of the reasons suggested for the defeat Wolves last weekend.

Having a big squad of players to choose from, the 56-year-old has previously stated his desire to improve the Magpies’ injury record.

With a plethora of options available to him across the long Championship campaign, being able to call upon a raft of players is a relatively new privilege to the Toon Army.
