Newcastle right-back DeAndre Yedlin has singled out his teammate Matt Ritchie as being the key player in Newcastle’s victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the EFL Cup last night.

Yedlin had only previously appeared from the sub bench for the Magpies, but against Derby County a couple of weeks ago he secured a 2-0 win at the iPro stadium after bundling in the second goal in the dying minutes of the match.

His first start against Wolves last night saw him help his side keep a clean sheet but he was in no doubt who the match winner for his side was. He told BBC Radio Newcastle (via the Evening Chronicle):

“Playing with Matt Ritchie on my side was a big help. He controls the game so well.”

”He’s a guy that when you’re in trouble you can get the ball to him and he’ll find a way out.

”He’s a great guy to play with and he scored a quality goal.”

Yedlin made his £5million move from Tottenham Hotspur at the end of August and will be keen to establish himself as the first choice right back with Vurnon Anita suspended for the next two league matches.

Meanwhile, his other rival for a starting place Jesus Gamez is sidelined with a calf injury.

He will almost certainly start for the Magpies once again against Aston Villa on Saturday evening.
