Ranked: Newcastle United’s three most important signings this summer

|

Daryl Murphy

Daryl Murphy

Clearly, Daryl Murphy has largely been brought in to operate as third-choice behind Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Still, the arduous nature of life in the Championship should see the Republic of Ireland international called upon relatively often.

As good as Mitrovic is, the Serbian ace is hard to truly rely on as he gets to grips with the fiery nature of life in the second tier.

Gayle should be an elite marksman at this level, though his inability to truly lead the line against more physical teams was evident in the first two games of the season.

Those reasons make the capture of Murphy vital, with the 33-year-old able to step in and do a job in the aforementioned pair’s place.
