Former Newcastle player Daryl Janmaat has been talking about the reasons behind the club’s relegation to the Championship last season. The Dutch international was sold to Watford for £7million before the end of the summer transfer window, and he attributes the Magpie’s poor displays as being due to a lack of a teamwork.

The Dutchman firmly believes that the squad had enough talent to stay up but the lack of team spirit and organisation meant the club’s demise was likely. He told the Hornet (via the Evening Chronicle):

“It just didn’t happen for us, and it’s hard sometimes to say why. We had some good players, but we weren’t really a team, and that’s much more important than having talented players. Unfortunately we weren’t good enough at times during the season and it ended with us being relegated.”

Interviewed earlier this month, former Newcastle defender Steven Taylor attributed Newcastle’s relegation to the same reason, and with the huge turnover of players at the club over the summer with twelve new signings and over twenty leaving either on loan or permanently, Newcastle fans will hope that the new squad put together by Rafa Benitez has a much better team spirit to help them during the relentless Championship season.
