Ex-Newcastle ace returns to Argentina after release

|

Former Newcastle midfielder Jonas Gutierrez has returned to Argentina with Primera Division side Defensa y Justicia according to Pasion Futbol. After being released by the Magpies in 2015, the 33 year old moved to La Liga with Deportivo La Coruna.

Last season with Deportivo he made 17 appearances in all competitions but he will move back to Argentina on a free transfer. It will be the first time Jonas has played for a club in his home country since he left Velez Sarsfield for Mallorca eleven years ago.

After spending three seasons with the Spanish island club, he moved to the North East for the start of the 2008/09 campaign. Despite relegation to  the Championship at the end of that season, he stayed with the Magpies for seven years, during which he had to fight a battle against testicular cancer. He recovered and made a remarkable return to first team action in March 2015.

Now back in Argentina, he could face former Newcastle team mate Fabricio Coloccini this weekend if both are selected in the league match between Defensa y Justicia and Coloccini’s San Lorenzo.
