Newcastle’s preparations for the vital home clash with Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday have suffered a major blow, as reported by the Chronicle Live

With both sides widely tipped as promotion candidates, the visit of the Seagulls is an early glamour tie in the arduous Championship campaign.

However, Rafa Benitez has been rocked in his preparations for the weekend following the news that BOTH Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic have been ruled out with concussion.

His star strikers were ruled out of contention following injuries picked up in the EFL Cup second round win at home to Cheltenham Town on Tuesday.

The Magpies are adhering to the FA’s Concussion Guidelines that sees players rested for six days after the incident before returning to competitive action.

Ayoze Perez, who notched a brace during the win, can be deployed as a striker, while forgotten man Emmanuel Riviere is the only other recognised option with vast amounts of top level experience.

Academy graduate Adam Armstrong could also be an option as the Spanish coach looks to shuffle his pack.

Could this give Brighton the advantage?
