Newcastle United and Sunderland are both interested in signing Manchester United defender Paddy McNair, according to The Sun (via the Daily Star).

The Northern Irish international is believed to have been told by United manager Jose Mourinho that he can leave the club, and both the Magpies and the Black Cats have expressed an interest in the 21 year old.

Rafa Benitez is looking for another central defender, according to reports. He currently has three first team centre backs in Chancel Mbemba, Jamaal Lascelles and Grant Hanley but he may want to have additional cover going into a long league campaign in the Championship.

Sunderland manager David Moyes is also said to be keen on McNair who would have noticed the centre back coming through the ranks as Manchester United manager a few years ago. McNair has made 24 league appearances for United in the last two years under previous boss Louis van Gaal, who was replaced by Mourinho this summer.
