Marseille winger Florian Thauvin has confirmed to Maxifoot.fr that the purchase option inserted into his season long loan from Newcastle will kick in pretty much automatically at the end of the season.

Purchase options usually allow the purchasing club to opt against signing the player but it looks as though that the Magpies have made the deal so that Marseille are obligated to sign the winger. Maxifoot.fr say the purchase price amounts to €11million or £9.5million and Thauvin told the French website that the purchase is “almost automatic”. The 23 year old also explained that he told manager Rafa Benitez early on in the summer that he wanted to leave the Magpies and the Frenchman praised the conduct of the Magpies boss:

“I spoke with Benitez during the offseason. I expressed my wish to leave the club. I said that I had a lot of respect for him but I did not see my future at Newcastle. He was very professional, listening. I thank him. He understood my choice.”

Thauvin was also interesting Lazio  but after spending the second half of last season on loan back at Marseille after moving from the Ligue One side last summer, it was clear the French club was the winger’s preferred destination.
