Championship sides Birmingham City and Preston North End have been in contact with Newcastle about signing defender Kevin Mbabu on a six month long loan deal, the Evening Chronicle are reporting.

The full back/centre back recently signed a two year contract extension to stay at St James’ Park but the 21 year old is not deemed ready for first team action by manager Rafa Benitez and will be allowed to leave on a temporary basis during this transfer window to gain more first team experience.

The Swiss Under 19 international made three appearances under Steve McClaren in the league last season, making his full league debut at left back in the 2-2 draw against Chelsea back in September. He then made another start in the 6-1 defeat to Manchester City in the following match but was substituted after 53 minutes. He has made just one more appearance for the first team coming on as a last minute substitute against Bournemouth in the 1-0 win back in November.
