Sheffield Wednesday striker Fernando Forestieri has stated his desire to stay with the Owls and has apologised for his behaviour after refusing to play against Norwich City at the weekend.

The Argentine was believed to be interesting both Newcastle United and Derby County, who reportedly had a £7million rejected for the player. The 26 year old released a statement via Twitter:

“There are a lot of rumours and opinions going around which have been blown out of proportion and are upsetting. I just want to clarify I never wanted to leave and have always and still do want to play for Sheffield Wednesday! I apologise for my behaviour and know there is no excuse! I hope we can move on so I can focus only on my passion!”

After the 0-0 draw against Norwich City, Sheffield Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal told reporters that Forestieri had refused to travel with the squad to play at Carrow Road, and that both he and the club captain Glenn Loovens had to persuade the forward to play in the club’s first match of the season against Aston Villa last weekend, in which he scored the winning goal.

Forestieri told Carvalhal that his head wasn’t right to play indicating he was unsettled by the speculation surrounding his future at Hillsborough but it now looks like he will be staying with the Championship side with Newcastle needing to look elsewhere for a new striker.
