Newcastle left back Massadio Haidara has revealed he has begun light training after nearly 9 months out with a knee meniscus tear.

The Frenchman told the Evening Chronicle that he had injured his meniscus twice which has kept him out for a longer period of time but he is now on the road to recovery with a return to full fitness not too far away.

“I feel really happy, because it has been a long wait.My meniscus was injured twice and it was hard, but now I am happy to be back in training. It is not full training but to be with the lads on the pitch is an amazing feeling.”

The 23 year old will have a fight on his hands if he wants a place in the first team. In his absence, Paul Dummett has become the regular left back, and it looks likely that Everton’s Brendan Galloway will sign on a season long loan deal before the end of the week, increasing competition further. It is unlikely that Haidara will return to fitness before the end of the transfer window which would rule out a move away from St James’ Park on loan to gain fitness and form, but it maybe something that is revisited in January if he is still behind Dummett and Galloway in the pecking order.
