Newcastle are interested in signing Napoli and Italy winger Lorenzo Insigne, according to the Il Mattino newspaper. The Naples based newspaper believes the 25 year old is unsettled at the Serie A club and is upset by the failure of the Italian side to offer him an improved contract.

Insigne currently earns €1.1million a season (€1.7m including bonuses) with Napoli but the player is unhappy that fellow winger Jose Callejon is getting €2.6million despite putting in better performances than the Spaniard last season.. Napoli are believed to have offered a contract renewal to 2021 worth approximately €2.5million a year but the player and his agent want almost double that, at around €4.5million a year.

This led to English teams Newcastle and West Ham United to offer €5million a year, around £80,000 per week for Insigne, according to Il Mattino. No doubt this is a negotiation tactic by Insigne and his agent to get a bumper new deal with Napoli, but Magpies boss Rafa Benitez would know Insigne well from his time in Naples and maybe sounding out the player if he is still available next summer.
