Newcastle United could make a move for Verona centre back Filip Melander, according to gazzamercato.it. The 23 year old was only signed last summer but the Italian club were relegated from Serie A, finishing bottom on 28 points with just five wins all season.

Now in Serie B, Verona need to sell some of their best players to balance their finances and they would like to make a profit on the player they signed for €1million from Malmo. The Italian side are believed to have set a €4million asking price for the Swede, and gazzamercato are also reporting that Magpies’ rivals Sunderland could be interested. New Black Cats manager David Moyes is keen on strengthening his backline before the start of the Premier League season.

Melander has yet to get a senior cap for Sweden, although he was included in the squad for the match against Moldovia back in October. He made 26 appearances in all competitions for Verona last season, scoring two goals.
