Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles believes that the Magpies players need to show arrogance on the pitch and take control of matches against lesser opponents if they are going to live up to expectations this season.

The centre back was talking after Newcastle slipped to a 1-0 away defeat in their first league match of the campaign against Fulham on Friday night. The 22 year old said to the Evening Chronicle that there shouldn’t be any complacency but they should be professional enough to show their class against other Championship teams:

“We can’t get complacent and take our foot off the gas. But we should have a sort of arrogance about us. We shouldn’t be in this league and on paper we are one of the best teams in the league, so we have to act like it on the pitch. We can’t look at other teams and get on with our jobs with a professional attitude.”

The Magpies face Huddersfield Town at home at St James’ Park on Saturday and will be hoping for a much improved performance against David Wagner’s side with Newcastle expecting over 50,000 fans for the first home game of the season. The Terriers will be heading into the match full of confidence after beating Brentford 2-1 at home in their first match last weekend.
