Newcastle United are not interested in signing Peter Crouch from Stoke City, according to the Shields Gazette. A report in the Mirror had claimed that manager Rafa Benitez was interested in bringing the 35 year old to St James’ Park.

The Magpies boss bought the 6ft 7in striker when he was Liverpool manager in 2005, paying £7m to Southampton for the player, and with the departure of Papiss Cisse to China, it looks as though the link has come about because it is believed that Benitez wants to shore up his striking options.

Despite Newcastle signing Dwight Gayle from Crystal Palace for £10million, and having Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez already in the squad, with younger players such as Adam Armstrong also providing support in attack, the Evening Chronicle believes that Benitez is still looking at the possibility of bringing in another striker this summer. The Shields Gazette are adamant though that it won’t be Crouch.
