Newcastle are interested in signing Derby County and Ireland centre back Richard Keogh, according to the Evening Chronicle. The local newspaper says that the Magpies are confident of sealing a deal for Blackburn captain Grant Hanley but have drawn up a list of alternative targets which include Keogh.

The other players on the shortlist include players who have been reported before, Sheffield Wednesday’s Tom Lees and Fulham’s Fernando Amorebieta, but Keogh’s inclusion is a new development.

The 29 year old is an experienced centre back in the Championship and has been a stalwart in Derby’s defence since joining from Coventry City in 2012, making almost 200 appearances for the club in all competitions.

He also has 14 caps for Ireland and made 2 appearances in the European Championships this summer, playing the full 90 minutes as Ireland held out against Italy to win 1-0 and progress from the group stages, whilst also playing in the 2-1 defeat to France in the last 16.
