Newcastle United are not looking to sign Southampton left back Matt Targett this summer, according to the Evening Chronicle. The 20 year old has been linked with a £5m move to Tyneside in some press reports but the local newspaper believe Rafa Benitez’s side hold no interest in the England Under 21 international.

The Magpies currently have Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara who can play in the position but it was believed that Targett could provide more cover in the full back area.

Targett’s future at Southampton is more uncertain now that first choice full back Ryan Bertrand has committed his long term future to the Premier League club. It was announced yesterday that England international Bertrand had signed a new five year contract to stay at St Mary’s and Targett may have to be content with a place on the bench next campaign unless he impresses new Saints boss Claude Puel in preseason.
