Newcastle United are targeting Fulham centre back Fernando Amorebieta, according to HITC Sport. The Venezuelan international defender spent most of last season on loan at Middlesbrough before returning to Craven Cottage in February.

Although not a regular while at Boro or at Fulham, the 31 year old is an experienced centre half and spent the best part of 10 years at La Liga side Athletic Bilbao before moving to London in 2013.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez is looking for experience in the centre back position after the departures of Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor and Amorebieta could be seen as an alternative if the Magpies’ bid for Blackburn Rovers captain Grant Hanley fails.

Hanley is the club’s primary target but Benitez has already had two bids of £3.5million and £4.5million rejected for Hanley with Rovers believed to be holding out for £6million. If the transfer for the 24 year old proves too difficult, Amorebieta may well be the centre half they turn to.
