Newcastle United are facing the prospect of losing Andros Townsend for just £8 million if they are relegated, with The Mirror claiming that the England international has a clause in his contract allowing him to leave if the club drop to The Championship.

The North East outfit bolstered their chances of retaining their Premier League status on William Hill sports
by reinforcing the squad in January, with the flying winger one of the new faces, arriving from Tottenham Hotspur.

Townsend netted a spectacular consolation strike for Rafa Benitez’s side in the 3-1 defeat to Southampton at the weekend, giving the travelling support an isight of what he is capable of.

However, the report suggests that Newcastle included a clause in the contract he signed earlier this year that would allow the attacker a get-out-of-jail-free card should the Geordies finish in the bottom three.

Townsend has ambitions of playing for England and as such looks set to leave Newcastle if they are relegated – with the club losing money in the process.
