Cedric BakambuNewcastle United and Crystal Palace are set to go head-to-head for the signature of Sochaux Cedric Bakambu according to the Daily Mirror.

With Papiss Cisse short of form and seemingly on his way out sooner rather than later, Loic Remy only on a temporary deal until the summer and Shola Ameobi’s future far from certain, Newcastle are in desperate need of another forward.

One option is Cedric Bakambu, with reports from L’Equipe that Newcastle have already approached Sochaux about his availability.

The 22-year-old has been with Sochaux since 2006 and has started to find the back of the net in recent years as he features for the first team more regularly.

The Frenchman, who can also play off a front man, netted 11 times last year and has six times in Ligue 1 this season.

Rated at £3 million, Bakambu has played at the FIFA U20 World Cup for France and is also wanted by Crystal Palace manager Tony Pulis.

Bakambu most recently netted for Sochaux before the winter break when he scored a brace at home to Rennes.

His first in that match was from the penalty spot, but his second saw him initiate a one-two before coolly slotting past the ‘keeper.
