Prem Table Per SpendNewcastle United have made a solid start to the Premier League season, especially having won their last four matches on the trot, and one table that shows this more than any is pictured below (above on mobile).

It’s not a table that you will have come across very often, but the cost per point table illustrates the value for money that teams have got on their purchases from the summer.

Newcastle only spent £2 million in the close season, with that cash going to QPR in the season-long long deal for Loic Remy, which has already proved to be a bargain as the Frenchman has eight Premier League goals to date.

There were no other outlays for the Magpies, which see their cost per point at just £88,000 ahead of the encounter with Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium tomorrow night.

Other high flyers include second placed Stoke City, despite their struggles this season under Mark Hughes, Hull City and West Brom, with all of those teams having a cost per point of less than £1m.

At the other end of the table, it’s no surprise to see Sunderland in the bottom three given that they have already switched managers from Paolo Di Canio to Gus Poyet.

Joining the Black Cats are Manchester City, who have a cost per point of £4m, and at the bottom are Tottenham Hotspur who have a cost per point of over £5m, although Spurs fans will argue that they recouped that money through the sales of Gareth Bale, Tom Huddlestone and co.

My five year old has looked at this and thought long and hard to find a more meaningless basis for an article. e ha come up with a table which Tottenham topped as receiving in excess of £100 million from sales during the summer window. Then again he’s only five it appears Tom Jones might have already reached his sixth birthday. Hope not as, given the flawed “thought” process it would warrant pity.
