Etienne CapoueAs the list of Newcastle United transfer targets over the summer starts to be released, the usual suspects are on there, but according to the Journal there was one name on the list who hadn’t previously been mentioned – Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Etienne Capoue.

It was no secret that Newcastle were after the likes of Darren Bent, Bafetimbi Gomis, Demba Ba and Florian Thauvin, but two names that weren’t widely reported were Norwich City midfielder Anthony Pilkington and Spurs star Capoue.

Joe Kinnear was interested in Capoue before he signed for Tottenham from Ligue 1 side Toulouse for a fee of around £10 million on the 15th of August, which from the early signs looks like a very handy piece of business.

Currently out for a month due to the injury he sustained in the north London derby against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, in the couple of games for Spurs before that the Frenchman looked dominant in the middle of the park.

25 years of age, central midfielder Capoue was supposedly seen as a potential replacement for Yohan Cabaye if he was to leave Newcastle, but of course that didn’t happen so the Magpies weren’t forced to bring in another body in that position.

Knowing that Newcastle were interested in Capoue, I will now be following the Frenchman’s career in the Premier League a little bit more closely to see how he gets on.

Tottenham fans, what have you made of the 6ft 2in defensive midfielder so far?

Very different to Cabaye…tremendous power and speed in front of back four..very encouraging start but not a playmaker

He is veira. One of our best buys. Him and sandro together…..thats frightening

  • John says:

He had an outstanding debut but was all at sea v Arsenal before getting injured.

If we had the balls to replace the liability that is Tiote, we may have had more of a chance of signing him

Agree about Tiote. When you guys came to WHL about 2 years ago with Barton, Cabaye and Tiote in the middle of the park, I remember thinking this was a very un-Newcastle side. It wasn’t about being defensive it was about being overly aggressive and Tiote in particular was more concerned with kicking players than the ball. Cabaye has a nasty streak but at least he can play too.

He’s been very good so far considering he’s joined a much changed side still getting to grips with each other, in addition to his own settling period.

I thought Sissoko was excellent for you guys when he first joined but seems to have lulled a bit since so I am not getting too carried away with Capoue just yet. The comparisons to Patrick Vieira are laughable given at 25, Vieira was one of the best midfielders in Europe.
