TaibiTonight was a special night at St James’ Park as Newcastle United legend Steve Harper had his well-earned testimonial, but it was a former Manchester United goalkeeper and laughing stock that spoiled the party.

50,793 Newcastle fans turned up to give Steve Harper, who is now at Premier League club Hull City Tigers, the send-off that he deserved and thank him for his 20 years of service for Newcastle United.

It was a star-studded affair for Harper’s testimonial as a Newcastle XI took on an AC Milan XI and it was a little disappointing that the match ended 0-0.

As a result the match went to penalties, but Newcastle’s spot kick takers just couldn’t find a way past former Manchester United goalkeeper Massimo Taibi.

The 43-year-old, who is infamous for his gaffe against Southampton in 1999, allowing Matt Le Tissier to score, but there was nothing of the sort tonight.

Taibi saved penalties from Peter Beardsley, two from Faustino Asprilla as the Colombian got to re-take his effort, and from Harper himself.

Even though Pavel Srnicek also made a couple of saves if wasn’t enough, as Milan won 2-1 on penalties to seal victory.

However, it was a great night all round and a nice way to say goodbye to a Newcastle United legend.

Here’s that gaffe again for anyone who wants to see it. Head to 01:40…
