Why would Newcastle sell £6m French star to Manchester City?

Mathieu DebuchyThere are always some strange transfer rumours that do the rounds each transfer window, but this one linking Newcastle United right back Mathieu Debuchy with a move to Manchester City is one of the oddest.

Sky Italia journalist @dimarzio is reporting that the 28-year-old Frenchman is a target for new Man City manager Manuel Pellegrini.

Translated into English, he said: “Mathieu Debuchy can leave Newcastle. Waiting for him, in fact, there is Manchester City. The French full-back, who at the time of Lille also liked to Inter, can move the team coached by Pellegrini. Born in 1985 and already fixed point of the French National Debuchy this season he played 14 games with the jersey of Newcastle.”

Now, in Gianluca Di Marzio’s bio it says he is an ‘expert in the transfer market’, but given this latest rumour, that might need some amending.

There is no doubt that a move from Newcastle to Man City would be a step up for Debuchy, but the Frenchman only linked up with close friend Yohan Cabaye in January.

The Magpies will be in no mood to sell either, having spent £6 million for him six months ago and being pretty short of competition in the right back area following Danny Simpson’s exit.

Meanwhile, Man City have strength in that area, with Pablo Zabaleta a permanent fixture, while Micah Richards could still be a top, top player.

Considering how long it took Newcastle to sign Debuchy, you can’t see them letting him move on less than a year after finally capturing him.

Stranger things have happened though…

More to the point why would City want an average player from a mid-to-bottom of the table team when they have more than enough top class experience in that position anyway.

lol one of the best full backs in the Euro’s last year……. I agree city with their bank balance have better targets

no need to sound so bitter about it lad

Oh listen at the money grabbing Manc, the only reason you’re where you are now & not in the 3rd division is because some rich Arab couldn’t get his hands on the Toon of Ashley, so he went for second best & brought your shower instead, then pumped in almost a billion to make you what you re now, second best to the Red side of Manc land… talking about trophy hunters, your tiny ground is full of them now!!!

I remember not that long ago when toon had 17000 home fans on average .before king Kev turned up . fans are fans regardless of owners. I do smile when I get called a glory hunter . been watching city since 69. Personally I wouldnt want any toon defenders.

        To Toon 69

Talk about bitter… by the way … City fans still turned up when we were in the lower divisions … more than can be said for some clubs claiming to have a huge loyal fan base eh ?

& Don’t worry your little self as there is no way city would want your full-back as we have at least 2 better players in that position already

  • Gary says:

Yeah bit nasty Phil, the point should be Zabbo and Micah are better players but out of interest how highly do you Toon fans rate him?

  • Macca says:

Why would City want to sign Debuchy? Zab and Micah are miles better!

  • James says:

Signing Debuchy would allow Micah Richards to be played in his preferred role as CB.

    • John says:

Micah is best when he’s bombing forward. And considering he’d be up against formidable opponents like Kompany and Nastasic for a CB position, he’s better off at RB.

  • Luke says:

Coming from a man city fan I would like to see us sign debuchy he has been great for France but hasent impressed yet in the premier league however I think he will be better in his second season in the premier league, even though city have already got Richards and zabaleta no body can replace zabaleta and I think Richards should be playing at centre back when he’s not injured debuchy should be back up for zabaleta but play debuchy in the easier games so he gets plenty of game time unlike Sinclair did.

  • Melbourne Blue says:

Agree with your comments Tom; Debuchy quality player that he is, doesn’t fit with City’s needs at the moment and would battle for a spot against Zabba & Michah, but stranger things happen and he would add depth. Good luck to the barcodes from round 2 onwards!
