Troy DeeneyAs Newcastle United continue to look for a new striker this summer, The People is reporting that Watford star Troy Deeney is the latest name on their list.

25-year-old Deeney has caught the eye of a number of clubs over the past 12 months and continues to greatly impress in the Championship.

Last season he netted 19 times in the second tier of English football, including the goal against Leicester that took the Hornets to their unsuccessful playoff final.

This year he’s been even more prolific, scoring five goals in three Championship matches, which has included a hat-trick against Bournemouth at Vicarage Road.

Deeney has been something of a late developer, having been released by Aston Villa as a youth player and joining Watford from Walsall in 2010, but now the 6ft striker is clearly making up for lost time.

It appears that being sent to prison just over a year ago has been a turning point in his career, as he served three months of a ten-month sentence for affray.

Since then he has been a revelation at Watford and Hornets manager Gianfranco Zola is understandably keen to keep hold of his number nine.

With West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur being credited with an interest Zola said: “We don’t want to lose him but we are a small team and if a big team come in it can be difficult.”

A reformed character, Deeney could be ready for the step up to the Premier League and Newcastle could give him plenty of game time in the top flight.
