Hatem Ben Arfa fatOne thing that footballers are tasked to due in pre-season is to get fit for the start of the new campaign, but it appears that Newcastle United winger Hatem Ben Arfa might have had one too many croissants over the summer.

As Newcastle took on Braga at St James’ Park on Saturday in their final pre-season match ahead of the 2013/14 Premier League season, most of the players looked fit and ready to go, apart from Ben Arfa who looked like he was carrying a bit of extra timber.

Then, the picture above emerged on Twitter today, which shows Hatem with a bit of a belly, but is it fat or is the Frenchman just bulking up and adding muscle to build up his strength levels ahead of the new season?

Questions about Ben Arfa’s weight first came about back in March, when he appeared bloated and overweight as he headed into court, with the Newcastle hierarchy apparently far from happy at the time.

So what do you think? Is ‘Fatem’ Ben Arfa carrying a bit too much weight, or is just putting on the right amount of muscle so that he can hold off defenders on his mazy runs?

One thing’s for sure, he’s got a way to go until he’s even in the same league as Sol Campbell…

From 3 days ago. End of. Pardew refused to play hatem for 6 months 2 seasons ago so if he was fat, he wouldnt play him.

He was skinning people vs braga as well, at one point he turned a defender inside out, three times in about 5 seconds.

“Remember that was a terrible hamstring injury and I remember people questioning if he would come back the same. Actually in pre-season he’s produced faster times than anyone else. We know that burst of power is there and that is what sets him apart.”

I can confirm that he is definetely is carrying too much weight. He came back 2 stone overweight for pre-season. He lives in Gosforth and is regularly in the Ahad curry restaurant (not eating salad).
Compared to the average bloke he’s not in bad shape, compared to professional footballers – he needs to shape up!.
Hopefully he’ll be sorted for the start of the season.

Why? Why? Why? Do we spend our time looking for everything negative, forget anything good let’s dig around until we can find something to moan about. Is it just the trait of a Geordie? If so how about cutting it out. I am not saying that we should wear rose tinted specs but what are we fed.

ben is fat, we have no defence, midfield is a shambles get rid of Tiote, Pardew must go. Do you never get sick of writing all this garbage.

Take a look in the mirror when you are perfect start throwing the stones.

fat bastard but who cares he plays for some relegation fodder team, toon or sunderland or someone… as a Tottenham fan I rarely look down the arse end of the table

@ David Dutch well if you think everything is rosey then give your opinion, that is what blogs are for. If you believe that things are more positive than people think then give your reasons for thinking that. People can post there opinion on their football club and I believe most of it has been realistic not delusional, overly optimistic nonsense.
