Manuel FernandesNewcastle United are rivalling Liverpool and West Ham for the signing of Portugal midfielder Manuel Fernandes according to reports in Turkey.

27-year-old midfielder Manuel Fernandes will be well known by Premier League fans, with the Portugal international previously completing loan spells with Portsmouth and Everton respectively back in 2006-2008, and is thought to be keen on a return to England.

Currently plying his trade with Besiktas in Turkey, Fernandes has just one year left on the three-year deal that he signed in the summer of 2011 and he has clearly been a success in Turkey, with Fenerbahce also registering an interest in the player.

In his three years in Turkey, Fernandes has netted 12 times in 58 league appearances, which is by far the best scoring rare he’s achieved in his career to date.

Fernandes also has nine international caps for Portugal to his name, although he has hardly featured for his country in recent years.

The 27-year-old is a powerful player and the Newcastle scouting network has obviously identified a potential bargain as his deal runs down.

I have to admit, I don’t particularly remember Fernandes from his time at Portsmouth and Everton (he didn’t exactly set the Premier League alight), but he has a decent pedigree and would be a good addition to the Newcastle United squad.
