Only one winner in Newcastle and Everton bidding war

James McCarthySky Sports have tonight revealed that both Newcastle United and Everton have made bids for Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy, but the Toffees have to be strong favourites to land the Scot.

This is a rumour that’s been around for most of the summer, with Wigan’s £20 million valuation for the midfielder seemingly cooling interest until the news of a pair of bids broke this evening.

It is encouraging seeing Newcastle actually bidding for players, even though we don’t how much the Magpies have bid, but I can’t really see Newcastle landing him.

Goodison Park is definitely the 22-year-old’s most likely destination, given that he would be keen to link up again with former Wigan manager Roberto Martinez.

This is reflected in the odds, with Everton at evens to sign the Scottish international, with Newcastle slightly longer at 2/1, although they have come in from 8/1.

Both clubs are lining up McCarthy as a replacement for potential outgoing central midfielders, Yohan Cabaye in Newcastle’s case and Marouane Fellaini in Everton’s.

However, Fellaini looks much more likely to stay than Cabaye, so maybe Newcastle could land James McCarthy after all.

*Mark Douglas from the Journal has said that no bid has been made yet, but there could be movement in the next few days, especially if Cabaye leaves…

James McCarthy is an Irish international and not a Scottish International. That’s a pretty bad error for someone calling themselves a journalist!!!

Lets just hope that players don’t read this or any other Newcastle website….. No player in their right mind would tip up with a bunch of fickle fans slaying the club! And I’m a season ticket holder! B

I think between Tiote, Anita, Sissoko, Bigi and even Jonas we have enough cover for central midfield to be honest. If or when we do sell Cabaye I’d rather the money go on a wide player like Tom Ince or Gylfi Sigurdsson. Dare I suggest Callum McManaman from Wigan instead. But that’s a greater need for us IMO.
