Shola Ameobi v SunderlandShola Ameobi has been a great servant for Newcastle United.

While he may not have found the back of the net as much as he’d liked or even made it onto the pitch due to injury, Ameobi is always there when it matters, particularly against the arch-enemy Sunderland.

The 30-year-old has been at Newcastle since 1995, spending five years as a youth player and then a further 12 to date as a senior player.

He made his Newcastle United senior debut way back in 2000 against Chelsea at St James’ Park and since then has played more than 300 times for Newcastle in all competitions, including close to 250 Premier League appearances.

His goal scoring record is not as good as it could be, or as good as Shola would like it to be, but he has notched up 50 league goals for Newcastle and a further 22 in cup competitions.

Of those 72 goals for Newcastle United, only two came last season; one which was an equaliser against Tottenham Hotspur and the other which was an invaluable late leveller against Sunderland.

Ameobi has made something of a habit out of scoring against the Mackems, as his Premier League equaliser against Sunderland at St James’ Park last season took his record to 7 in 12 games against the enemy, which is only bettered by Newcastle legend Jackie Milburn.

The 6ft 2in striker’s goal scoring record may only be one in five, but those seven goals against Sunderland are worth their weight in gold and you know that Ameobi will always give his all for the club that he loves.

So as a tribute to the Mackem-slayer, here are 72 of Shola Ameobi’s goals for Newcastle United…
