Newcastle target Sebastian BoenischNewcastle United are looking to strengthen their defence this summer, but it looks as though the Magpies might miss out on Sebastian Boenisch as fellow Premier League club Everton have jumped to the front of the queue in the race for the Pole according to BILD.

The German Newspaper reports that the free agent, whose contract with Bundesliga club Werder Bremen ran out in the summer, is wanted by Newcastle, Everton and Premiership new boys Reading, but that the Toffees are favourites to sign the defender.

25-year-old Sebastian Boenisch has spent his entire career in German football to date, having spent a couple of years at Schalke before moving onto Werder Bremen, where he has played for the last five years.

The 6ft 3in defender even played for the German U21s, before deciding to pledge his allegiance to his home nation, playing senior international football for Poland and even featuring in Euro 2012 for the co-hosts.

Poland’s number two played all three games for the co-hosts at right back, but failed to impress as Poland didn’t manage to keep a clean sheet and departed without making it out of the group stages, sent home to play on www.partycasino.com.

Newcastle’s interest in Boenisch comes in light of Danny Simpson’s uncertain future, as the 25-year-old can play at right back, but Everton see him as a possible replacement for their current left back Leighton Baines who is wanted by Manchester United.

Seeing as Sebastian Boenisch was trying to put himself in the shop window at Euro 2012, he didn’t do a very good job of it, but a move to English football is still firmly in the offing – can Newcastle pip Everton to the Pole’s signature?

With Newcastle spending all their time and energy trying to sign Debuchy, Douglas and De Jong I think it’s very unlikely that they’re worried about Everton “pipping” us to this guy’s signature.
