Papiss Cisse - Senegal captainNewcastle United striker Papiss Demba Cisse had a mixed night in Dakar yesterday as he led Senegal to a 3-1 victory over but failed to score from the spot as the Senegal captain missed a penalty for his country.

Leading his country out onto the field would have been a proud moment for Papiss Cisse and the Newcastle number nine now looks to have been installed as the permanent captain of his country after also wearing the armband in Senegal’s last match.

Senegal have already started their qualification for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and fell behind early in the match against Liberia before Cisse had the chance to equalise from the spot.

Papiss Cisse stepped up but with little conviction, as he saw his shot to the goalkeeper’s left fairly easily saved and his rebound lacked any power at all.

Cisse did somewhat make amends later in the first half, as Senegal’s number 15 provided the cross for Ibrahima Balde to equalise.

In the second half Liberia had a man sent off before a great goal from Dame Ndoye gave Senegal the lead and then a second from Balde sealed the result.

Here are Senegal v Liberia highlights and you can see Papiss Cisse’s penalty miss on 02:00 and look out for Ndoye’s great goal too…

I wonder who will be Newcastle’s penalty taker now, as Demba Ba missed against Sunderland at St James’ Park last season and now Papiss Cisse has failed to score against Liberia. If only Newcastle could bring on Shola Ameobi just for pens!
