Newcastle target Mathieu DebuchyEuro 2012 may be over as far as England and Newcastle United are concerned following the exit of France and The Netherlands, but it could be a tournament that greatly matters to the Magpies and the fortune of the club next season.

Euro 2012 was all about two players for Newcastle – one who currently plays for the club and one who’ll hopefully be wearing the black and white stripes next season.

France may have been knocked out by Spain in the quarter finals, but Euro 2012 marked the end of a very good year for Yohan Cabaye.

The French midfielder produced the form he’s been showing for Newcastle all season and his goal against Ukraine capped off a great game for Cabaye.

He showed that he’s now a vital member of Laurent Blanc’s squad and just how much he was missed against Sweden was illustrated by France’s dismal performance.

While Premier League fans will now be familiar with Cabaye after Yohan has spent one season in English football, his former Lille teammate Mathieu Debuchy was a little bit off the radar.

Following Debuhcy’s performances in Euro 2012, that is certainly no longer the case and Newcastle will do well to fight off interest from other Premier League clubs and tempt him to Tyneside.

Yohan Cabaye can show that friendship matters most and get his great mate Mathieu Debuchy at Newcastle, but I wonder what matters most to Debuchy…
