Fabricio Coloccini - Newcastle captainFollowing a drubbing like the one Newcastle United suffered at the DW Stadium at the hands of Wigan in the Premier League on Saturday, you need your experienced campaigners to step forward and lead by example. The first person Alan Pardew will turn to is his captain, and in Fabricio Coloccini he has the ideal player to put the weekend’s defeat behind him and lead the fight against Chelsea on Wednesday.

In a very revealing behind the scenes look at Newcastle United by the Daily Mail’s Colin Young, other than how welcoming Newcastle have been to the players that have come in, the one thing that shines through is what a great example Coloccini is setting. The Argentinian international centre back is seemingly the best captain you can ask for, and he is setting the standard on the pitch and off it.

Young writes: “The first player to arrive every day, without fail, is Fabricio Coloccini. We find the Newcastle captain by his locker in the otherwise empty dressing room at eight thirty.” That might sound fairly unexciting, but little things such as being the first to arrive and/or the last to leave can really have an effect on your colleagues and will mean that the younger players look up to him even more.

Newcastle kitman Ray Thompson agrees saying in regards to Newcastle’s professionalism that: “I’d say a lot of that comes from the captain. Colo is one of the most professional players I’ve encountered and he just makes sure that everything is done properly and all the squad understands their responsibilities. That makes everyone’s life easier.” I’m sure there’s no room for players acting up with Fabricio around.

While Coloccini may be well respected, he’s also well liked in the dressing room. Young explains that Colo drinks his own Argentinian green tea, with Fabricio saying: “I drink this every day and Jonas will have a cup too. Ryan Taylor tried it too but he didn’t like it so much.” Maybe Demba Ba’s strawberry syrup is more up Ryan’s street?

Whether the Newcastle players like Coloccini’s green tea or not, they certainly like him as a person and respect him as a captain. Manager Alan Pardew will be able to rely on Coloccini trying to right Wigan’s wrongs against Chelsea and hopefully he’ll put in a stellar performance and lead Newcastle to a positive result at Stamford Bridge.
