Newcastle midfielder Mehdi Abeid believes he has a bright future at the club after flourishing during his maiden year at St James’ Park.

The 19-year-old Algerian midfielder has made a big impression on Tyneside since signing from French club Lens last summer becoming part of Alan Pardew’s squad within weeks of his arrival.

And despite making only two cup appearances for the Magpies this season he has set tongues wagging within St James’ after a series of accomplished displays in the reserves.

Abeid acknowledges his rapid progress is down to mixing it with ‘mentors’ Yohan Cabaye and Cheick Tiote during training and admitted the duo have had a huge impact on him.

“When you play and train alongside top players it helps you to get better.” He told the Evening Chronicle

“That’s great for me because I am young and hopefully have a long career ahead of me, so playing with the kind of talented players that we have at the club can only benefit me.

“Hopefully, training with the first-team players will help me to improve, and it’s up to me to show the manager that I have a long future ahead of me at the club.

“I want to stay here and fight for my place, and hopefully I will get my chance to show what I can do for Newcastle.”

The Algerian under-23 international has yet to make his Premier League debut for the club and could be sent out on loan to a Championship club before the end of the month with Pardew keen for him to gain as much experience as possible before next season.
