Why are Newcastle looking to trade in for a worse model?

While the January transfer window may have shut last week, there are still plenty of transfer rumours doing the rounds and Newcastle United are being linked with a new right back. The Magpies were thought to be interested in Crystal Palace’s Nathaniel Clyne last month and continue to monitor the Championship starlet ahead of a possible move in the summer. But with Danny Simpson already on Newcastle’s books, why are the Magpies looking to trade in their defender for a worse model?

If Newcastle were looking to buy Clyne as backup to Simpson and to eventually challenge Danny for the spot in the starting eleven then that would make sense. However, according to The People Alan Pardew is preparing to lose Simmo at the end of the season as contract negotiations between the two parties cannot be sorted out. The 25-year-old has been as solid as ever for Newcastle this season and to lose Simpson would be a real shame.

As for Nathaniel Clyne, Newcastle are just one of a number of interested clubs. Manchester United, Liverpool and Wolves are all reported to be interested in the England U21 international who has played over 100 times for Palace despite being just 20 years of age. Pardew went to watch Clyne play for Crystal Palace against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday and the youngster was solid enough as the Eagles kept a clean sheet in a goalless draw.

In the summer Newcastle should be looking to strengthen their squad rather than weaken it, which I feel losing Simpson would do. I’m all for signing Clyne but he shouldn’t be seen as a replacement for Simmo, more someone who can learn from Danny. Also, if Newcastle are to raid Palace in the summer then they should make their move for Wilfried Zaha too, as he has been really impressive this season and a bid of £5 million plus would be hard to turn down.

£5 million for zaha you must be joking bolton offered that and were told where to go!

  • Nick Dryden says:

simpson and willo are our weakest links as neither are comfortable on the ball and able to bring the ball out of defence. not saying clyne is the answer as we already have tavernier and santon could be pushed across if we got someone like cissoko.

Nick totally with you there. Whilst Simpson has improved his technique is far below a Premier player standard and that goes for Williamson as well. They cannot hit a firm ball with any control so constantly chip the ball forward which makes it difficult for the mid-field or forward to move the ball on with pace. I never cease to be amazed at how some of the contributors have such little understanding of the Game.

I’ve seen Clyne on a number of occasions and whilst he is far from the finished article his technical ability gives him the potential to be a far more accomplished player than Simpson.

  • Jason says:

I’m sorry but this seems like a pretty clueless article to me… From what I’ve seen of Simpson, Clyne is at least his equal and being only 20 will continue to improve.

As far as Zaha goes, he will develop into a very good player but at the moment is far from the finished article and there is no chance he is moving for £5m as Bolton upped their January bid to £7m and were still told no…

I think both would improve your squad but at the moment only Clyne out of the 2 would be pushing for a starting place from the off.

The author of this article needs to give his head a shake. I’m a northern based palace fan (Darlington) and everyone of my mag supporting friends/colleagues would describe Danny Simpson as a liability! Nat Clyne is probably one of the best players to ever grace a palace shirt. The fact he has over 120 appearances for the club and has captained the side at such a young age speaks for itself. You’d be mad to turn him down especially as he is out of contract and it’ll be for a fraction of his real value.

    • Tom Jones says:

Would never turn him down, but we can’t replace an established player with a 20-year-old

  • s says:

The author of this seriously hasnt seen Clyne play has he? what a moron

  • jim coulson says:

Can not agree with the article about Simmo being up to it , to many goals shipped from his patch, I would suggest playing Santon on the right and look for a proper left back.

  • Joe Cpfc says:

£5 million for Zaha ??? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH
That might buy them his left foot.

  • Dave says:

Bit unfair on Simpson some of the comments, he’s been pretty sound defensivley getting a number of blocks and tackles in this year. Going forward he could definitely improve tho as his crosses aren’t the best. Never really seen the Palace kid so can’t comment.

  • Tony Toon says:

I have never understood the amount of criticism Simpson gets from some fans. He has been a pretty consistent performer this season and while responsible for the odd error of judgement has often been the final line of defence, saving several goal bound efforts on the line. He is a team player whose criticism is way over the top. That said Clyne seems to be a top talent potentially so why not bring him in?

I never cease to be amazed at the arrogance of some contributors who believe that they and they alone have such a profound and insightful understanding of the Game.

  • Vince says:

right, simpson wants to stay, but newcastle wont offer him a better contract.. which he deserve’s! he has been consistent, he has been a key player for the past few seasons, he may not have the best touch but makes up for it with passion and hard graft. who can name me 5 better right backs in the premier league? Kyle walker, sagna, fabio, the three ive named are better full backs but who else is there? santon can play there but Fat mike ashley only puts his hand in his pocket if he makes a profit from another player. i predict simo will be away and a younger un-established player will come in, someone give ashley a brain please, anyone with a brain would give simo an extra 2k a week and buy the crystal palace youngster.. were gona end up in Europe next year with a squad of 15

    • Sharpy17 says:

Vince – the improve contract has been agreed – the problem is how it is paid to him. Re 5 better RBs well Micah Richards, Kyle Walker, Sagna, Fabio and Glen Johnson, plus Santon already at Newcastle. That said, don’t think Simmo is a bad defender and the ideal scenario would be for Simmo to stay and Clyne as very good competition for the RB spot, esp if we make Euro. However if the price tags on Clyne and Zaha are true, they won’t be at Newcastle. I’d pay £3.5m for Clyne and no more than £5m for Zaha. Zaha wouldn’t be my first choice striker from the lower leagues tho, I’d be looking to get Rhodes in long before Zaha

  • Toon69 says:

I think you’ll find you’re all counting your chickens before they’ve hatched… as the Toon will bring in Pieters in the summer, who’s a proper LB, we’ll then move Santon over to the DB position & have Tavenier as backup to him if Simmo leaves… we’ll then have Fergie as backup for Pieters & Saylor back too, with Willo as his backup… we’ll maybe bring in another CB & a striker in the summer but can’t see us buying either Clyne or Zaha forthe prices quoted!!

  • Patchty1 says:

Danny Simpson stands to far off his opponent and allows for easy cross’s, he is a very poor defender, anyone who thinks other wise cannot be watching the same player as me, most of our problems come from his position, I suggest you watch and take note of where our goals are conceeded from, the biggest majority are from Danny giving his opponent to much room, the sooner he leaves the better
He complains about not being paid as much as most in our team, the club are refusing to bring his wage up to a parity with the rest of the squad, now why do you think they are doing that, quite simply because he is not as good or worth as much as them, others such as Guthrie, Jonas, Tiote could or have recieved far better contracts, but they would rather let Simpson go, the club know that he is squad standard only and that a new right back is needed, if he signs on a low wage then they have some back up, but a high wage, not a hope, he’s not worth it

It is perfect time to make a few plans for the long run and it is time to be happy. I’ve learn this put up and if I may just I want to suggest you few interesting issues or advice. Perhaps you can write next articles relating to this article. I want to read even more issues approximately it!

  • Mark d says:

Those of you knocking Clyne clearly have not seen too much of him play, u21 international and easily good enough for ANY prem team

  • Christian says:

Is this blog serious?! It’s just it lacks any sort of intellectal content I thought it must be a joke. We turned down a bid of 7m from Bolton but 5m would be hard to turn down? When will people understand that Palace no longer need to sell to survive? Then again am I expecting too much from a Newcastle fan?

  • john says:

All wasting your time…Clyne going to man utd in the summer done and dusted and Zaha staying for at least another season after which he will go to one of the big premier clubs

  • Peter Strutt says:

If you look at Simpson’s career at the age of 20 he’d only played 50 odd games and with 3 different clubs (to 2007). At this point Clyne has 120+ appearances. He has the potential to grow, but still with a vast level of experience. Clyne will have the better career whether it is with Newcastle, ManUre or any other club.

To be fair they are both better than anything Alex Ferguson has in that position because Smalling and Jones aren’t fullbacks and Fabio is not even a footballer.
