The man with a big weight on his shoulders at Newcastle

Fabricio Coloccini is one of the most popular players at Newcastle United right now. The Argentinian had his 30th birthday on Sunday and is Alan Pardew’s main man at the back. Other than shipping five goals against Fulham on Saturday, Newcastle’s defence has been pretty solid this season and that has a lot to do with captain Coloccini’s leadership of the back four and at St James’ Park right now there are few players with a bigger weight on their shoulders.

As things stand, without Steven Taylor, Coloccini is an invaluable member of Newcastle’s starting eleven. Alan Pardew cannot afford for Colo to get injured or even suffer a poor run of form, as this will have a catastrophic effect on their defensive record. The rest of his back four are also fairly inexperienced, with neither Danny Simpson, Davide Santon nor Mike Williamson having played at the top level for a long period of time, unlike Coloccini who has played 34 times for Argentina.

In an ideal world, Newcastle will sign a new centre back before the January transfer window slams shut next week, but even then Coloccini will still have a huge role to play. It’s looking like if Newcastle do make a signature it will be for a young centre half, along the lines of Watford’s Adrian Mariappa. If that situation was to arrive, Coloccini would then have to quickly form a new central defensive partnership and ensure that the back four is watertight.

There is another issue that will be on Fabricio Coloccini’s mind as well, which is the prospect of signing a new contract. Coloccini signed a five-year deal when he became a Newcastle player back in 2008, so his contract is set to run out in the summer of 2013. Plenty of time you might think, but unsurprisingly Pardew is keen to get his captain signed up for the long-term and while Coloccini is clearly enjoying the responsibility he has at Newcastle, he might wonder if one big move is left in him.

Hopefully that’s not the view that Newcastle United captain Fabricio Coloccini will take and if he doesn’t sign a contract now, that they’ll be in depth discussions in the summer. That will take a load off the mind of the player who has a big weight on his shoulders due to the responsibility and importance to Newcastle of captain Colo.
