As you’ll know by now, Newcastle United are at advanced stages in the signature of striker Papiss Demba Cisse. A fee has been agreed with Freiburg, thought to be in the region of £7-10 million and the Senegal international is on Tyneside to have a medical.
Despite Alan Pardew stating earlier in the season that he wouldn’t be bringing a new striker to Newcastle in the January transfer window, it seems like he’s gone back on his word and persuaded Mike Ashley to put his hand in his pocket.
So what of Papiss Cisse? The 26-year-old played 12 times for Senegal, scoring 7 times and thus is a compatriot of Demba Ba. Currently at SC Freiburg, Cisse has found the back of the net 37 times in the Bundesliga since he moved to Germany in 2009.
Just in case you think that this is all rumour and conjecture, then here’s a picture from Sky Sports News’ footage today to prove that Cisse is in fact in Newcastle. Both parties will be keen to tie up the deal quickly so Cisse can fly back to the African Cup of Nations.
Say hello to the second Demba on Tyneside…
