Nothing less than Fabricio Coloccini deserves

There have been fantastic performers all over the pitch this season for Newcastle, and while it’s hard to pick any individual players out for praise, Fabricio Coloccini deserves a special mention. The Newcastle captain has led by example for the Magpies, and while the Newcastle defensive effort has been far from a solo one, Coloccini has marshalled his troops with aplomb. Therefore, the news that the Argentina international is set to be rewarded with a five-year contract is nothing less than Coloccini deserves.

If Fabricio Coloccini didn’t settle into the English game immediately, then he has certainly made up for it now. Alongside Steven Taylor, for whom having the Argentinian’s experience to call upon can only help his development, Coloccini has helped to make Newcastle’s defence almost impregnable. He reads the game like an international and could be described as the brain that perfectly complements Taylor’s brawn. Add in Danny Simpson and Ryan Taylor and you’ve got a more than competent back four.

Coloccini is one of the few Newcastle players still on big money. Reportedly the defender is on £55,000 a week, and it appears that Newcastle chiefs are ready to go against their policy in order to secure the long term future of their captain. The Sunday Sun is reporting that Coloccini is going to be offered a five-year deal, with four years at an increased salary. That will keep Colo at the club until he is 35 and ensure that he’s a mainstay in the Newcastle backline for many years to come.

This can only be good news for the Toon Army and follows on from his compatriot Jonas Gutierrez being given a similar long-term deal earlier in the season. While Newcastle’s transfer and contractual policies are admirable, sometimes you have to pay top dollar to keep big players, and Coloccini is definitely worth the money. I would be delighted to see Colo’s fuzzy hair at St James’ Park for another half a decade and I’m sure Alan Pardew is doing all he can to get his captain to sign on the dotted line.
